Recently I got wistful thinking of life as it was for my family years ago. Fun times with our best friends the Deutschmanns. Places we went and returned to. Eating popcorn and pound cake after evening church. Memories - that can't be relived, since neither my family nor the "D's" live where we used to any more. We've all moved on, moved away, gotten married, and gotten scattered. We can't get together for Christmas any more, or Sunday lunch, or to watch slides on the living room wall.
But the Bible says, "Do not say, 'Why were the former days better than these?' For you do not inquire wisely concerning this." (Eccl.7:10). We are called to thank God for the past, trust Him for the future, and live in the present. To redeem the time. To enjoy the circumstances of today, realizing that one day, today will only be a memory as well.
And one day, there will be no more parting or grief or sorrow. No more wretched good-byes. This is what comforts me - that Heaven comes. My life is like a mist that quickly goes away. "For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth; And the former shall not be remembered or come to mind." (Is.65:17).
